Income Tax Help for Teachers

From purchasing classroom supplies to paying for grad school tuition, a career in teaching can leave a person feeling a bit light in the wallet. Fortunately, there are a number of tax breaks available to educators. If you're a teacher looking for income tax help, here's what you need to know:

Reporting Income from Tutoring

The educational institution employing you should provide you with a Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, which reports your income from wages, prizes or awards. Payments that you receive for providing services as a tutor, in addition to your regular job, may be considered income from self-employment and are reportable on Schedule C, Profit or Loss from Business. Examples include tutoring high school students and college students after school or providing music lessons to any individual (voice, piano, drums, guitar, etc) on the weekends.

If you are self-employed and your net earnings are $400 or more, you must pay self-employment tax on the income you report on Schedule C. In addition, you may need to make estimated payments to cover the amount of self-employment tax or income tax associated with the income you report on Schedule C.

Deducting Continuing Education Expenses

You may be able to reduce your taxes by deducting expenses for tuition incurred in pursuing graduate school or other additional education. If the education is part of your state school board's certification renewal process, it may be deductible. However, if the education is needed to meet the minimum educational requirements to qualify you for a particular position, or if the education will qualify you for a new trade or business, it is not deductible. Changing from an elementary school teacher to a secondary school teacher or changing the subject you teach, from biology to art, for example, is not a change to a new business. Classroom teachers that become guidance counselors or school administrators are also not considered to have changed their trade or business.

Once you have met the minimum educational requirements for teachers for your state, you are considered to have met the minimum educational requirements in all states. This is true even if you must get additional education to be certified in another state. Any additional education you need is qualifying work-related education. You may still be able to obtain a benefit from educational expenses that do not qualify for a work-related education deduction if you qualify for the Hope Credit, the Lifetime Learning Credit, the student loan interest deduction, or the tuition and fees deduction.

Deducting the Cost of Supplies

If you are a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide in a school for at least 900 hours during a school year, you are allowed an above-the-line deduction of up to $250 of qualified expenses you paid during the tax year. This deduction directly reduces your income, and you do not need to itemize deductions to obtain this benefit.

While supplies used for home schooling or non-athletic supplies used for courses in health or physical education do not qualify, you may be able to deduct the out-of-pocket cost for supplies that exceed the $250 limit if you itemize your deductions. You should keep receipts to substantiate all expenses.

Other Itemized Deductions

Other expenses teachers may be able to include as itemized deductions are:
* Subscriptions to professional publications or magazines
* Professional dues
* Union dues
* Fees paid to renew your teaching certificate
* Expenses incurred when lecturing, writing or publishing for which you receive no additional compensation other than your regular salary. Note: These expenses may be for research, incidental travel and publication costs. They must be ordinary and necessary expenses for activities related to, and expected for, your position.
* Clothing required for work that is not appropriate for everyday wear, such as an art teacher's smock or a dance teacher's jazz shoes
* Allowable car expenses incurred when taking mentally handicapped students on an excursion
* Cost of materials used for a class play or a class party

Explain this to me my fellow Liberal ideologues?
You say Supply-side doesn't work, well let's see what Clinton did. Although President Clinton raised only the highest marginal tax rates, he did give America the largest Capital Gains Tax CUT in American History. President Clinton cut spending by 3.5% percentage of the GDP. Clinton also reduced regulations, passed welfare reform, removed the retirement earnings test for Social Security, and passed NAFTA through congress. Although Clinton passed several bills like the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act, which helped lead to the destruction of our economy in 2008, his economic policies are a CLEAR reminder of supply-side success. The high income tax on the rich helped pay for the debt and deficit, while his reduction in spending helped balance the budget. To keep employment rates high, Clinton reduced Capital Gains. But we must remember that the Republican congress made sure the budget stayed balanced (Congress controls spending and budgets.). Clinton at heart was a Keynesian. But by 1994 (Second year in Clinton presidency.), a republican congress was elected. One led by a REAL conservative leader, named Newt Gingrich. Last time supply-side economists describe supply-side to be: 1. Lower Income taxes for all classes creates incentive to buy more, spend more, and invest more. 2. Lower Income taxes helps all classes and increases employment. 3. Lower Capital Gains helps all business and increase saving rates, investments, spending, and employment. 4. Lower Corporate Income Taxes brings more companies to the U.S. thus lowering unemployment. 5. No Death Tax, since it is unnecessary. This tax hurts those who have lost a loved one. 6. Reduced Spending to balance the budget. 7. Fewer regulations on business will encourage growth and production. 8. Free Trade helps the nation as a whole, economically. 9. The Gold Standard makes it easier to balance the Federal Reserve?s money supply. 10. Taxes should only be raised to pay for deficits. Sounds more like Clintonomics... Hmmmm... WOW, i think i just blew people's minds away lol. love the personal attacks. Where are the "smart" liberals?

Income Tax help PLEASE.?
My ex-boyfriend and I have a 3 year old daughter together. The first year she was born, he gave her social security card to his mother without asking me. I think they claimed her on their income taxes. Okay, we break up soon after, I get a new boyfriend, and then the second year comes along. They still have her card, and he NEVER see's our daughter but for like 20 minutes on the weekend. NEVER pays me child support. My boyfriend now helps me take care of her. We live together. Anyway second year comes along (my boyfriend was unemployed at the time) my daughters father calls and asks if he can claim her and split the money with me. I said yes, but of course he didnt split the money. So right now is the third year, me and my now fiance have been living together for two, he has a stable job, and he's pretty much my daughters father. I FINALLY got her ss card back. Can my fiance claim her? I just have so many unanswered questions. Sorry if all of that sounded scrambled.Thanks!

Never filed my income tax. HELP please!?
I don't think my income tax filed through for 2008. I am a college student and my school had a program set up to file income taxes for the community and all students for free. I asked the guy that was helping me out to mark me as independent but he noted me as a dependent. A couple weeks before school was out I got a call telling me that there was a mistake. I told them over the phone that I was an independent but they asked me to come into the office and sign a form to confirm the change in the files. I went but the man that was supposed to help me would be out when I stopped by. Now I am back on campus and freaking out. I had nearly completely forgotten! What can I do? And what will be the consequences of not getting this done sooner?! Will I end up owing money, how much? THANKS YOU GUYS!
